Gabion Retaining Wall Cost in 2026: Price per m³, m² and Delivered

What a gabion retaining wall really costs in 2026: USD 6–11/m² mesh FOB China, USD 55–180/m³ installed. Includes stone, geotextile and labour breakdown, plus regional rates.

Gabion Retaining Wall Cost in 2026: Price per m³, m² and Delivered

The short answer

A gabion retaining wall costs USD 90–180 per cubic metre installed in Western Europe, North America and Australia, and USD 55–95 per cubic metre in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. The gabion boxes themselves — the part you actually import from a factory — are only USD 6–11 per square metre of mesh, or roughly 15–25% of the finished wall cost.

That gap between the box price and the installed price is where most budget estimates go wrong. This guide breaks the wall down into its five cost components, gives 2026 factory-gate and installed price ranges, and shows which specification choices move the number most.

What actually drives the price

Mesh surface area, not wall volume

Gabion boxes are priced by square metre of mesh, not by cubic metre of wall. A 2 × 1 × 1 m box has about 11 m² of mesh including the internal diaphragm, and holds 2 m³ of stone. A 1.5 × 1 × 1 m box has about 8.5 m² of mesh and holds 1.5 m³.

Smaller boxes carry more wire per cubic metre of finished wall — typically 25–35% more — because the surface-to-volume ratio is worse. That is why a wall built from 1 × 1 × 1 m boxes costs more per m³ than the same wall built from 2 × 1 × 1 m boxes, even though the box price per unit looks similar.

Wire diameter and zinc coating

Wire diameter is the second biggest lever. Standard gabion mesh uses 2.7 mm wire with 3.4 mm selvedge (edge) wire. Stepping up to 3.0 mm or 3.4 mm raises the steel content by 23% and 58% respectively, and the box price follows roughly linearly.

Zinc coating matters more than most buyers expect:

SpecificationZinc massTypical relative costService life, inland C3Service life, coastal C4
Electro-galvanized20–40 g/m²0.85×5–10 years3–5 years
Hot-dip galvanized, standard240 g/m²1.00×25–40 years12–20 years
Hot-dip galvanized, heavy275 g/m²1.08×35–50 years20–30 years
Galfan (Zn-5% Al mischmetal)255 g/m²1.15×40–60 years25–35 years
PVC coated over 240 g/m² zinc240 g/m² + 0.5 mm PVC1.25–1.35×50+ years35–50 years

For a wall in a coastal or de-icing-salt environment, paying 8% more for 275 g/m² instead of 240 g/m² is the cheapest durability you will ever buy. Specify it as zinc mass measured by the ASTM A975 or EN 10223-3 stripping test, not as "good galvanized" — the difference between 240 g/m² and 60 g/m² is invisible on site and worth nothing in a decade.

Stone fill is usually the largest single line

Stone typically accounts for 30–45% of an installed gabion wall. A cubic metre of gabion needs about 1.1 m³ of loose stone, because voids run 30–35% and you need a little waste.

Suitable fill is hard, durable, and graded 100–200 mm for standard 80 × 100 mm mesh — roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times the mesh aperture so the stones lock but do not fall through. Locally quarried limestone, granite, basalt or river cobble all work. Sandstone and soft schist do not; they break down under freeze-thaw and the wall loses its interlock.

Stone cost varies from USD 18/m³ at a quarry gate to USD 70/m³ delivered to a tight urban site. On remote projects, the transport leg often exceeds the stone itself.

Geotextile and drainage

A non-woven geotextile separator behind the wall face costs USD 1.50–4/m² and is not optional. Without it, fines migrate into the stone, the wall stops draining, and hydrostatic pressure builds behind a structure designed to be free-draining. Budget it as 1.3 m² of geotextile per m² of wall face.

Labour and plant

Installation labour runs USD 15–40/m³ depending on wage rates and access. The work is not skilled-heavy — a four-person crew with a mini-excavator and a plate compactor can place 15–25 m³ per day — but it is volume work, and remote sites with poor access can double the figure.

Factory price: what the boxes cost FOB China

These are 2026 first-quarter reference ranges for hot-dip galvanized double-twist mesh, 80 × 100 mm aperture, 2.7 mm wire, packed flat for container loading. Zinc prices move the number by roughly ±15% over a year, so treat these as a planning baseline, not a quote.

Three things push a unit price to the top of the range: 3.4 mm wire, 275 g/m² zinc, and lacing wire or stiffener specifications above the standard. A 40-foot high-cube container holds roughly 1,800–2,200 m² of flat-packed gabion mesh, which is a useful sanity check — if a supplier quotes you a freight rate for 5,000 m² in a single 40-footer, the mesh is thinner than specified.

Gabion versus the alternatives

The comparison that matters is rarely the headline cost. Gabion wins where ground movement is expected, where drainage is a problem, where the site is remote and labour is unskilled, and where a natural stone finish is required by planning authorities. Concrete wins where the wall must be vertical, where the footprint is tight, and where the load is concentrated — a bridge abutment, for example.

Five ways a gabion quote gets inflated

  1. Pricing by wall volume instead of mesh area. A supplier who quotes USD 45/m³ of wall for boxes is really quoting USD 22/m² of mesh. Ask for the mesh area and the price per m², then compare.
  2. Thin wire sold as "2.7 mm". Measure a sample with a micrometer on arrival. A 0.2 mm shortfall is 14% less steel and invisible to the eye.
  3. Electro-galvanized passed off as hot-dip. Ask for the zinc mass test report per ASTM A975. Electro-galvanized mesh rusts at the cut ends within a year in a coastal atmosphere.
  4. Stone quoted as "included" at an assumed rate. Confirm the graded size, the source, the delivered rate, and the void allowance. A 35% void ratio means you need 1.1 m³ of loose stone per m³ of wall.
  5. Lacing wire and diaphragms excluded. Standard gabion boxes include internal diaphragms every 1 m and lacing wire at 5% of box weight. Some quotes strip both out and add them back later.

What to put in your RFQ

A gabion enquiry that gets an accurate price back the same day contains six things:

  • Box dimensions and quantity (or total mesh area in m²)
  • Mesh type and aperture — e.g. hexagonal double-twist, 80 × 100 mm
  • Wire diameter, including selvedge wire
  • Zinc coating mass, with the test standard
  • Whether PVC coating is required, and if so the coating thickness in mm
  • Destination port and required delivery window

Anything missing from that list turns into an assumption in the quote, and assumptions favour the seller. Our gabion box specification page lists every parameter we need, and our engineers will size the wall from a site photo and a height figure if you do not have drawings yet.

Do you need a design, or just boxes?

Two very different purchases get called "buying gabion":

Boxes only. You have a stamped design, or you are repairing an existing wall, or you are lining a channel where the geometry is obvious. Send the mesh schedule and we quote in 24 hours.

Design and supply. You have a slope, a load, or a washout problem and no drawings. In that case the wall needs a section design — base width, face batter, tier spacing, and a check against sliding and overturning. We do not stamp drawings, but we will produce a preliminary section for your engineer to review, which usually saves two rounds of correspondence.

Either way, the cost conversation starts with the same three numbers: wall height, wall length, and what is behind it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 10 m gabion wall cost?

For a 10 m long, 2 m high wall with a 1 m base — 20 m³ of wall — expect USD 1,100–1,900 in Southeast Asia and USD 2,000–3,600 in Northern Europe, installed, including stone, geotextile and labour. The boxes alone, delivered FOB China, run about USD 250–420 for that wall, and sea freight on a 20-foot container is USD 800–2,500 depending on the lane — which is why small orders are dominated by freight and large orders are not.

Is a gabion wall cheaper than concrete?

Installed, yes — typically 40–60% cheaper in Europe and North America for walls under 6 m. The gap narrows on very small walls, where the fixed costs of mobilisation dominate, and can disappear entirely where stone has to be trucked a long distance while ready-mix concrete is local.

How long does a gabion wall last?

50 years or more with 240 g/m² hot-dip galvanized mesh in a rural or inland urban environment, and 35–50 years in a coastal one. The mesh, not the stone, is the limiting factor. Where the design life must exceed 50 years in an aggressive environment, PVC coated mesh over 240 g/m² zinc is the standard specification.

Can I fill gabion boxes with site-won material?

Only if it meets the grading and durability requirements. On-site crushed rock is often acceptable; excavated clay, topsoil or soft weathered rock is not. Filling with unsuitable material is the single most common cause of gabion wall failure, and it is not covered by any mesh warranty.

Do I need a geotextile if the wall is free-draining?

Yes. The geotextile is there to stop fines migrating from the retained soil into the stone, which would eventually clog the drainage path. A free-draining wall without a separator becomes a dam over five to ten years.
